What Is Going on This Week

I can't believe the end of the school year is here!  I have really enjoyed teaching this phenomenal class. 

Monday:
Singing on the Red Steps.  All fourth graders will sing together for this special service.
Musical at 1:00 in the theater "A Day in the Life of a Fourth Grader"

Tuesday:
We will be sharing their Poetry In-Class Projects and signing their writing portfolios.  We will begin cleaning up our desks today.  Please bring an empty backpack to begin brining items hone in.

Wednesday:
We will be continuing gathering items to take home and cleaning up the room. 

Thursday:
KICKBALL DAY!!!!!!  This is the second annual 4th grade kickball tournament.  The students will either be in PE uniforms or out of uniform this day.  I will update the class on the specifics before hand.  Please send a drink for your child along with sunglasses as it will be hot.

Friday:
Field Day and End of the Year Party.  This will be an out of uniform day but the shirts will be provided.

What We Are Learning This Week

The Duke field trip has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 14th.  Students may come out of uniform (shorts, t-shirts, tennis shoes or water shoes, hats, sunscreen , sunglasses).  Please pack a sack lunch.

Friday is a fun afternoon as our class has had great behavior in specials.  This coming Friday we will celebrate this accomplishment.  Students may bring sleeping bags, pillows, board games, electronics, and a special snack of their choosing.  We will begin Fun Friday after the morning classes.

Our class will be presenting our Playground Proposal to the 2nd graders on Monday morning.  This will be the same presentation we did in the Media Center.  We will sell popsicles to the second graders either Tuesday when we get back or on Wednesday.

Math:
 This will be a review week with an end of the year assessment on Friday. 

English:
This is a review week.

Reading:
We will finish Unit 9, Compare and Contrast this week.  We will test on Friday, May 17th.  We will also complete our "in class" Poetry book project for May.

Writing:
We will miss writing this week due to the field trip.  The class has been sharing their persuasive papers.

Science:
The Sound Unit test will be on Tuesday, May 14th.  Please review all notes for the journal and the index cards we made in class.

History:
We will continue Chapter 10 this week, Challenges and Changes- Alabama after 1960.  The test is May 16th.

Spelling:
The final test is this Friday! The words will come from column 2 this week.
Alabama Fact will be from page 8.
Prefix: non-  meaning "not"
Suffix: -able   meaning "can be done"

What We're Learning This Week

Important Dates This Week:

Tuesday- Playground Project Bake Sale for 3-4 and 5-6 grade lunch waves and Mother's Day shopping in the Campus Store during PE
Thursday- AR Store at 8:30
Friday- The Duke Field Trip (sack lunch needed)

What We are Learning:

Math:
Test on chapter 11 this Thursday.  Please review debits and credits, adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers, and how to find the volume of solids at home.  The last math facts quiz is coming up!

English:
Review of prefix and suffix and of grammar skills covered this year.

Reading:
We will start unit 9, compare and contrast this week.  We will also begin our "in class" Poetry book project for May.

Writing:
We are working on coaching sessions for persuasive writing.

Science:
Vocabulary test on all terms from the unit will be on Tuesday, May 7th.  The end of the unit test is coming soon.

History:
We will start chapter 10 this week, Challenges and Changes- Alabama after 1960.

Spelling:
Spelling Test this Friday, May 10th.  Alabama Fact should come from page 7 and must be a fact not previously studied.  We have finished all of our spelling units in our workbook.  Spelling tests will be on words previously studied.  These words can be found on the back inside cover of the Spelling Workbook. 
Spelling Hint:  Study the third column of words.

Prefix: "im-" meaning not (impossible)
Suffix: "-er/or" meaning one who does something (painter, swimmer)

What We Are Learning This Week

We have several things going on in the next few weeks.

Our class Playground Project Proposal is this Tuesday, April 30.  It will be held in the Media Center.  Please try to attend.  The students have done all the work.  It should be great.

Math:
We will begin Chapter 11 on volume, capacity, and adding and subtracting with positive and negative numbers.  The test is set for May 9. 

Science:
We are still exploring Investigation 3.  This investigation focuses on how sound travels through various mediums, solids, liquids, and gases.  The quiz for this investigation has not been set yet but keep an eye out for the date in the homework pad.  The vocabulary quizlet link was sent out last week.  Please let me know if you did not receive it and would like it resent.

English:  We will finish prefixes and suffixes and then begin a review of various English skills.

Reading:  We will finish Unit 8, Drawing Conclusions,  this week. Unit 8 test will be on Wednesday, May 1st. Specs logs will also be checked this week.   April Book Projects are due on Tuesday, April 30th. We will finish the week playing and sharing our game board projects and reviewing. Unit 9- Compare and Contrast will begin on Monday, May 6th.

Writing: Persuasive writing continued- students will write a piece that will persuade someone to get involved in protecting endangered species.

History:  We will finish Chp. 9 this week. Chp. 9 test will be on Tuesday, April 30th. I will also check binders on that day. We will finish the week working on an in -class group project focusing on civil rights leaders. Chapter 10 will begin on Monday, May 6th.

Spelling:  Spelling Test this Friday, May 3rd.  Alabama Fact should come from page 6 and must be a fact not previously studied. We have finished all of our spelling units in our workbook. Spelling tests will now be on words previously studied. These words can be found on the back inside cover of the Spelling workbook. I have also given students a paper copy of the words.   Words for the test this week will come from Column 1 of the list.  Students will have Spelling homework assignments each night to help in their study of these words. Students should prepare by reviewing this list of words and focusing on the words that are more difficult for them. There will be no classroom words.  We are now focusing on prefixes and suffixes. Students will be required to write two sentences on their Spelling test- one sentence with a word including a prefix and one sentence with a word including a suffix. 
 Prefix for next week: Mis-  meaning “incorrectly”   and the Suffix is –Ing,   meaning “happening now”


Spanish:
A quiz is coming up soon.

What We Are Learning This Week

Reminder: Our annual sea turtle cake walk is this Friday, April 26th from 11:40-12:15 in the gym. Please donate a baked good for the cake walk! We are also accepting donations to help save the sea turtles!! Thank you for your support!!

Math:   We will finish Chapter 10 on Reflections and Symmetry. Test will be Friday, April 26th.

English:  We are finished with quotation marks. We will also study root words, prefixes and suffixes this week.

Reading:  Continuing Unit 8, Drawing Conclusions this week.  We are reading the books Caleb’s Choice, The Friendship Doll, and Running out of Time.  A study guide with pattern statement, process questions and vocabulary has been given. April book project instructions have been given as well.  The genre for this book will be History or Historical Fiction. The project will be due on Tuesday, April 30th. Tentative test date for Unit 8- Wednesday, May 1st.

Writing: Persuasive writing continued- students will write a piece that will persuade someone to get involved in protecting endangered species.

Science:  We will start Investigation 3.  A quizlet link will be going out this week as well.

History:  We will continue  Chp. 9, Change Comes to Alabama this week. Tentative test date for Chp. 9- Tuesday, April 30th

Classroom words this week are: translation, amplify, desegregation, and scrutiny.   We are now focusing on prefixes and suffixes. Students will be required to write two sentences on their Spelling test- one sentence with a word including a prefix and one sentence with a word including a suffix.  Prefix for next week: Un- meaning “not or the opposite of” and Ly- meaning” in a ____way. (example: happily)

What We Are Learning This Week

Please make note of the date change for the 4th grade musical.  The date has been changed to  May 20th at 1:00.

Math: 
We will begin chapter 10 on Reflections and Symmetry.  The tentative test date for the chapter is April 25th or 26th.

English:
We will work on making outlines to assist our formal papers for the endangered species report.  We will also be working on quotation marks again.

Reading:

Spelling Test this Friday, April, 19th.  Alabama Fact should come from page 4 and must be a fact not previously studied.  Classroom words this week are: integrate, frivolous, geometric, and frequency.  We are now focusing on prefixes and suffixes.  Students will be required to write two sentences on their spelling test- one sentence including a prefix and one sentence with a word including a suffix.  Prefix and suffix for next week are:  "Pre" meaning before and "full" meaning full of base word.

What We Are Learning This Week

Thank you for all of your efforts in helping make our Montgomery trip a success! Our students received numerous compliments on their knowledge of History as well as their good behavior and manners! I am so proud!

Math:   We will finish Chapter 8 this week on area and perimeter. We will test Chapter 8 on Friday,  March 15th. The test will cover area, perimeter, polygons, triangles, rectangles and squares. There will also be a Math Facts Quiz on Friday.

English: Pronouns and Antecedents

Reading: We will finish Unit 7 this week.  A study guide with process questions and pattern statement has been given. Unit 7 test will be Thursday, March 14th. I will also check Specs logs on Thursday.   March book project instructions have been given. The genre is mystery or adventure. Due date: Thursday, March 28th.

Writing: Finishing our presentations of short stories. We will then start a unit on persuasive writing.

Science: Vocabulary shirts are due on Monday. We will also begin our Sound unit this week.  We will begin our new vocabulary terms as well.  Be on the lookout for quizlet links being emailed soon.

History:  We will start Chapter 8, The Great Depression, on Monday, March 11th.

Spelling:  Spelling Test on Friday, March 15th.  Our figurative language focus is now onomatopoeia- a word whose sound suggests its meaning. The word this week is “pop”.  Alabama Fact should come from fact P.1 . We are starting over on our packet. The students must choose a fact they have not previously studied. What We Are Learning This Week

Our Montgomery field trip is this Monday, March 4th. Please have your student at school by 5:30. We will leave at 5:45 and return around 4:30-5:00 Monday afternoon. A sack lunch and drink is needed. Snacks will be provided. Please refer to the note sent home from the office in Wednesday mail for additional information on the trip or view it on the school website.

Math:   We will start Chapter 8 this week on area and perimeter. We will test Chapter 8 on March 15th. The test will cover area, perimeter, polygons, triangles, rectangles and squares.

English: Finish helping and linking verbs
 
Reading: We will continue Unit 7 this week. The comprehension focus is setting and our visual tool is a flow chart. A study guide with process questions and pattern statement has been given. March book projects instructions have been given. The genre is mystery or adventure. Due date: Thursday, March 28th.

Writing: We will continue our Unit on short stories. Pattern Statement: trouble usually moves toward calmness. Students are to create a character with some sort of problem that character faces and explain how they go about solving that problem. This week we will have individual coaching sessions as students prepare to write their final drafts. Presentation of short stories will follow.

Science: We will start our investigations on building telegraphs. The next Unit on sound will start the following Monday. A note went home in Wednesday mail concerning a vocabulary shirt project. This project is due on Monday, March 11th.

History:  We will be writing essays on our Montgomery trip. We will start Chapter 8, The Great Depression, on Monday, March 11th.

What We are Learning This Week

I hope everyone had a relaxing and fun filled Mardi Gras Break!  Here is what we are covering this week.

Math: 
We will continue on with chapter 7 on fractions and probability.  The unit test will be wither the 27th or the 28th.  There will be an adding and subtracting fractions quiz on Tuesday, February 19th.

English:
We will be breaking down subjects and predicates into simple subjects/predicates, and complex subjects/predicates.  There "might" be a quiz on Friday.  Ask about our grammar heroes.

Reading:
We will begin Unit 7 this week.  The comprehension focus is setting and our visual tool is a flow chart.  A study guide with process questions and pattern statement will be given to students this week.  February book project instructions have been given.  The book should be a fable or or tall tale.  DUE DATE: Thursday, February 28th.

Writing:
We will continue our unit on short stories.  Pattern Statement: Trouble usually moves toward calmness.  Students are to create a character with some sort of problem that the character faces and explain how the character goes about solving that problem.

History:
Chapter 7 begins this week.

Spelling:
Spelling test this Friday.

What We Are Learning This Week


I hope that everyone had a great weekend and that you are ready for this last week before Mardi Gras Break! REMINDER: Valentines and boxes/bags should be brought to school on Friday, February 8th. We will have a valentine snack and exchange valentines that afternoon!

Math:   We are continuing work on fractions, probability and chances. The focus will be on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, many names for fractions, and equivalent fractions.  The Chapter 8 test will be February 27 or 28.

English: We will begin simple and complete subjects and predicates.  We will also begin to create a comic strip featuring a specific part of speech.  This strip will be on going for a few weeks.

Reading: We will finish Unit 6- Illustrations. Unit 6 test will be Friday, February 8th.  A study guide with process questions, vocabulary and pattern statement has been given .  Specs logs will be graded for Unit 6 work this week. February book project instructions have been given. The book should be a fable or tall tale. DUE DATE: Thursday, February 28th.

Writing: We  have started our Unit on short stories. Pattern Statement: Trouble usually moves toward calmness. Students are to create a character with some sort of problem that character faces and explain how they go about solving that problem.

Science: We will be building our Mardi Gras floats on Monday and Tuesday.  We will write papers describing the floats and the circuit that was included on Thursday and Friday.

History:  We will finish Chapter 6 this week and test on Thursday, February 7th.  A study guide will be given this week. Mrs. McCullough will also check History binders on Thursday, Feb. 7th.

Spelling:  Spelling Test on Friday, February 8th. Our figurative language focus is now onomatopoeia- a word whose sound suggests its meaning. The word this week is “flutter”.  Alabama Fact should come from fact P. 19

What We Are Learning This Week

Important Information:
  • We will be singing in church this Monday morning at St. Paul’s church starting at 8:10.
  • Please turn in all green Bruno receipts.
  • Book Fair is this week.  Our class goes on Tuesday at 9:30.
  • We are in need of items for the 4th grade store.


Math:    We will start Unit 7 on fractions, chances and probability. The Unit 7 test is tentatively scheduled for February 26th.

English:  Reviewing all Parts of Speech: nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, interjections, conjunctions, prepositions

Reading: We have started Unit 6- Illustrations.  A study guide with process questions, vocabulary and pattern statement has been given. January book project is a biography. Project instructions have been given. Due date for the project is Thursday, January 31st.  

Writing: We are working on setting descriptions. We are focusing on the five senses to create our descriptions.

Science: We are continuing series and parallel circuits. Quiz on investigation 3 on Friday, February 1st. Mardi Gras shoe boxes are due on February 1st as well. Floats will be created in class. All that is needed is a shoebox. They can go ahead and paint the boxes at home but nothing else. Information was emailed out.

History:  We have started Chapter 6, Rebuilding Alabama.

Spelling:  Spelling Test on Friday, February 1st. Our figurative language focus is onomatopoeia- a word whose sound suggests its meaning. The word this week is “bang”.  Alabama Fact should come from fact P. 18

What We Are Learning This Week


I hope that everyone enjoyed their long weekend! This will be a short but busy week!

Math:    Will finish and test Chapter 6 on Friday.  A study guide will come home on Tuesday.

English:  Parts of speech review- nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, pronouns and interjections.

Reading: We are finishing Unit 5- Plot.  A study guide with process questions, vocabulary and pattern statement has been given. Unit 5 test will be Wednesday, January 23rd.January book project will be a biography. Project instructions have been given. Due date for the project is Thursday, January 31st.  We will start Unit 6- illustrations on Thursday, January 24th.

Writing: We will continue our Unit on descriptive writing. PATTERN STATEMENT: well-chosen words create pictures.  Students are creating descriptions about their characters and settings of their stories.

Science:  Beginning Investigation 3 Advanced Connections (Series and Parallel Circuits). There will be no quizlet link for this investigation. There are only three terms and they will be covered in class in detail. A note will come home on materials needed to build Mardi Gras floats from shoe boxes that will be lit up from a circuit built in class.

History:    Battle Book Project is due on Tuesday, January 22nd. We will present projects in class on that day. We will start Chapter 6, Rebuilding Alabama on Thursday.

Spelling:  Spelling Test on Friday, January 25th. Our figurative language focus is now onomatopoeia- a word whose sound suggests its meaning. The word this week is “splash”.  Alabama Fact should come from fact P. 17
