Finding the Mode with Starbursts

Who said learning Math couldn't be fun or involve sweets?  Not our class!  To continue our comprehension of maximum, minimum, range, mode, and median, we built Starburst towers.  Each buddy group had to stack Starbursts until the tower fell over.  We charted each group's results and found the necessary data (see picture below of the data).  Try organizing items or stacking them at home.  See if you can find the range, mode and median.  If you forget what the terms mean, ask your student to sing our song for you.

Lesson 2.5 (Organizing Data can be tricky for most 4th graders.  It covers mode, range, minimum, and maximum.)

Be on the lookout for another vocabulary powerpoint and quizlet link through email.  We will be making another vocabulary briefcase on Monday.  Please review the words.

Owl Pellets...Day 2 Dissection

I dissected an owl pellet.  I had a bird in my owl pellet.  It was really fun.
 I took it home and played with it.

Writing our Polygon Books

 Be on the lookout for your child's book!  We spent a Math class taking the pictures from the scavenger hunt and creating books with them.  It might be a few days before you see the book due to the group members taking turns bringing the books home.  Once the books have returned, I will take the books down to the Lower School to share with K-2.

We played Elf on the Shelf during one of our Morning Meetings this week.
Lewis had to guess who responded with "It is I." Each student had a chance
to be the Elf and the guesser.  It was fun listening to each student try to disguise
their voice.  The importance to attentive listening was discovered.

Polygon Scavenger Hunt

The class wrapped up Math Unit 1 with a Polygon Scavenger Hunt in Saint's Square and around the classroom.  The class, split into small groups, was given a camera and a set of items they had to locate.  The students were amazed with how much of what they had learned surrounded them in their world.

 

What We're Learning This Week

Math:  We will begin a short project involving technology and finding polygons around campus.  WE will also begin Unit 2.  Be on the lookout for a parent letter soon.

Science:  We are continuing with the human body.  This week we will be dissecting owl pellets on Thursday and Friday. 

Spelling:  The words this week will come from lesson 3.  The classroom words are:

multiplication, skeleton, comprehension, migration

 

Idiom:  "to put your foot in your mouth"  meaning to say something you shouldn't have

 

Alabama Fact:  page 3

 

Reading:  Continuing Unit 1 which is Sequence of events...no tests

 

History:  Continuing chapter 1 covering the Early Indians .  Geographic Land Region Quiz is Thursday!

A Moment From the Week

We had a great first week of school.  In Science we learned about the human body.  We learned lots of facts about the state of Alabama.  Did you know that the state flower is the camellia?  We have a new writing teacher this year, her name is Mrs. Dalanzo.  We had our Math fact quiz, our Science test, and our Spelling test.  We're going to have a great year!

It's All About Teamwork!

Our class has been participating in meetings once a week to help prevent bullying at St. Paul's.  Each meeting focuses on how to work together and how to treat others with respect.  This week's meeting involved working together to pass objects around the line and not mess up the item.  The objects ranged from shoes, balls, tissue paper, to cupcake liners.  The students had to support each other with positive words and their elbows only!  I must say that our class succeeded in this meeting with the exception of a few bent up items.

Summer Writing Challenge
