World Tour Day

The fourth graders got to spend a morning learning about various countries.  We had been preparing for this day for several weeks.  Each teacher selected a country to teach.  Parents stepped in to help prepare food, teach lessons, bring in examples, and help monitor students.  I could not have done this without all your help.  Thank you to everyone involved.

The students were allowed to work individually or in groups to
create a float based on a God or Goddess from a book read
during Library.

Sea Turtle Presentation

A representative from the Sea Lab came to speak to our students the last week of school.  The fourth graders presented her a check for $500.  The students got to participate in an activity demonstrating the probability of a sea turtle egg actually hatching and then how long a young sea turtle might survive.  The students learned that only 1% of the eggs laid will actually mature into an adult sea turtle.

Things You Need to Know

1.  There will not be a study guide for the Math test this week.  The students need to review everything
     covered through out the year.  The best things to review are the workbooks, the text book, and the
     study links.  I am looking into some Everyday Math Apps.

2.  World Tour Day is next Tuesday, May 22.  Our class is covering France with the help of Mrs.
     Rihner.  We will be getting with Mrs. Howes about what all is needed.  Please contact Mrs. Howes
     if you are interested in helping in some way, from donating your time or help gathering supplies.

3.  We will be doing research in the computer lab on Monday.  The students need to take the     
      information from their research and create a poster due this Friday.

4.  Our final church service will be Monday, May 21.  All fourth graders will sing together on the red
     steps.  This will be the last time they sing together as a grade level until the end of their senior
     year.  You are more than welcome to attend.  I hope to see you there.

5.  Field Day will be May 25.

6.  If your child has a summer birthday, June through August, please feel free to celebrate it before
     the end of the school year.  Email me if you want to do something.

The Duke

On Thursday, our class went on a boat called the "Duke."  First we got on and left the Dauphin Island Marina.  A little ways out we dropped a special net. The net captured plankton.  We put the plankton from the net into a container and used a special microscope to see the plankton.  After that we dropped the big net.  We dragged the big net around for a while, then we pulled up the net.  In the net we caught catfish, pin fish, needle fish, croacker, sting ray, cigar minnow, flounder, x-ray fish, and squid.  After we messed with the fish, we threw them to the birds.  It was a great trip.

Nanny Piggins...A Chocolate Party

This year the fourth grade read a book called Nanny Piggins which is a pig who loves chocolate. 

To celebrate our finishing the book we had a chocolate party which was a blast.

Creating Lines of Reflection

Students used transparent mirrors to discover Lines of Reflection between congruent images and to create the reflecting image.  Students learned the differences between Lines of Reflection and Lines of Symmetry.  A Line of Reflection splits congruent images in the middle so that each image is of equal distance from the line.  A Line of Symmetry splits one image into two halves that are congruent.  The fourth graders have had a blast with this unit.

Human Reflection



A reflection is a "flip" of an image.  To introduce this concept, the students had to reflect what their partner was doing.  The lesson ended with a belly of laughs and a learned concept.
