Joints

Look at my joints!
Ball-and-socket.  Get it?
Miming ball-and-socket joints.
Our class recently learned about the three main types of joints.  I
placed the students in small groups and assigned the groups either a hinge joint, ball-and-socket joint, and gliding joint.  The students mimed a joint while the other groups had to correctly identify the joint.  After guessing the joints, I asked the groups to create some type of action or stance that represented the chosen joint.  As always I was extremely impressed with their creativity.

Way too much fun happening here.

Dissecting Owl Pellets

Mrs. Carley's Chicken Cut-Up

Mrs. Carley visited the fourth graders to demonstrate how to cut a chicken and to show the bones.  She brought in a roasting chicken, tools, safety equipment, and yummy pieces of fried chicken for each student to enjoy.
Students listened intently as she described how to locate the joints of breast bone.

Examining Bones

Over the past few weeks, the class has learned about the purposes of the human skeleton and the main joints of the body.  We dissected owl pellets, watched as Mrs. Carley taught us how to cut a chicken, listened to guest speakers, and analyzed bones.

This past Monday we examined rodent and chicken leg bones, particularly the femur, pelvis, tibia and fibula.  The students had to figure out how the bones fit together and create a drawing based on their conclusions. The bones and joints were to be correctly identified by name.

The students worked diligently in their interactive Science journals by adding terms to their vocabulary briefcases.  Idea Frameworks and graphic organizers were drawn to compare the types of joints and bones. They reflected on their learning as well by completing a writing on demand.

Creating Bar Graphs

Group 1 used coins from various countries.
Group 3 looked at Mardi Gras beads
and grouped them according to color.

Our class just wrapped up Unit 2 in Math.  As a culminating activity, the class broke up into groups and created bar graphs from items brought from home.  The groups had to analyze the items and determine the best way to catagorize them.  The mode, median, minimum, maximum, and range all had to be found.  The students were highly engaged and the graphs were amazing!

Group 2 used paper clips of various sizes.
Group 4 brought in jelly beans and
peanut buttercups.

Welcome To Our Class Blog!

Welcome to Mrs. Benton's class blog.  You can look here to see what is going on in class from my point of view and the students.

Our started off the year fantastically, and I know that it is only going to get better.  We have so many things to look forward to this school year.  I hope you enjoy a peak into our daily routine.
